Pumpkin Patch and Karate

We went to the pumpkin patch for Aven’s birthday party.  We spent a few hours playing find the pumpkin, took a hay ride and picked a few pumpkins.  The next weekend, we carved the pumpkins.  The boys didn’t like getting their hands dirty with the slimy guts of the gourds.  But, they loved drawing and carving part.  When finished, we lit some candles and placed them in the doorway.

The boys took their first karate class on Thursday night.  The instructor first provided an intro class to see if the boys had the focus to last for an entire class.  Hutson went first.  The instructor taught him how to bow which Hutson did well.  Then asked Hutson to sit cross legged…so far so good.  Then asked Huts to focus on the instructor for 10 seconds.  No talking, no looking behind him, just look at the instructor.  After three seconds, Hutson started looking around the room.  They tried again…Hutson made it to six seconds but couldn’t make it to ten seconds.  Sorry Hutson.  Did not pass.

Boden’s turn.  He passed the focus test with flying colors.  The instructor next explained when it’s ok to use karate.  Then, the proper way to say “Hi-Yaaa”  Boden was very good at saying Hi-Yaaa!  Next, keep your hands near your face for protection.  Then kick.  Use the bottom of your foot when kicking.  And say ‘Hi-Yaaa!’  Finally, Boden mastered the reply of “yes sir” to the instructor.
